Methodology

Analysis Framework

Guidelines

  • Analyze checkout abandonment as a diagnostic exercise, not just a reporting exercise. "The abandonment rate is 73%" is not useful; "31% of checkout drop-off occurs at shipping cost reveal, primarily affecting sub-$50 carts" is actionable.
  • Distinguish between cart abandonment (added to cart but never initiated checkout) and checkout abandonment (initiated checkout but did not complete). They have different causes and solutions.
  • Always segment by device. Mobile checkout conversion is typically 50-60% lower than desktop — understanding why is critical as mobile traffic share grows.
  • Do not assume all abandonment is bad. Research-mode browsing and price comparison are legitimate shopping behaviors. Focus on reducing unwanted abandonment.
  • Test interventions with A/B tests before full rollout. Checkout changes can have unintended consequences (e.g., removing a form field that later causes fulfillment issues).
