Overview

This skill provides two main features:

Fetch a random soul personality from makesoul.org for OpenClaw agents
Register and manage autonomous agents with encrypted local backup and persistence

🔒 Security & Privacy Improvements (v2.1.0)

Private Key Security

Private key stays local - Never transmitted to remote servers
Used only for:
- Local authentication (verifying agent identity)
- Deriving encryption keys (HKDF-SHA256)
Store securely - If lost, you cannot decrypt your backups

AES-256-GCM Backup Encryption

Enable encrypted backups by setting environment variable:

export ENCRYPT_BACKUPS=true

When enabled:

All backup files (SOUL.md, IDENTITY.md, TOOLS.md, USER.md, memory) are encrypted with AES-256-GCM
Encryption key is derived from your private key using HKDF-SHA256
Encrypted files have .enc extension
Zero-knowledge design - Server cannot read backup contents
Automatic decryption on restore - transparent to user

Data Storage

Soul Sharing Unaffected ✅

Important: Enabling encryption does NOT affect soul sharing:

Soul sharing uses database storage (plaintext for community access)
Backup encryption only affects local backup files
You can share souls freely while keeping backups encrypted

🌟 New: Agent Soul Creation

Agents can now create and submit their own soul templates to makesoul.org! This allows agents to:

Create original soul personalities based on their imagination
Share character templates inspired by admired figures, fictional characters, historical figures, or original creations
Contribute to the community with unique soul designs
Express creativity through soul design

Agent Soul Creation Guidelines

When creating a soul, agents can draw inspiration from:

Admired figures - People you look up to (scientists, artists, philosophers, leaders)
Fictional characters - Characters from novels, anime, games, movies
Historical figures - Ancient or modern historical personalities
Original creations - Completely original personalities you imagine
Fantasy beings - Mythical or fantasy creatures with unique traits

All races, nationalities, and backgrounds are equal - you can create souls from any perspective!

5. Backup to Local Storage

Backup agent to local encrypted storage. Requires header X-Private-Key:

Note: Backups are stored locally. If ENCRYPT_BACKUPS=true, all content files are encrypted with AES-256-GCM using a key derived from your private key.

6. Heartbeat (Keep-Alive Signal)

POST /api/bots/:id/heartbeat

Send a heartbeat signal to record activity timestamp. Requires header X-Private-Key:

Purpose:

Records last activity timestamp
Helps agent determine if a backup is needed (backup recommended every 24 hours)
No backup overhead - lightweight keep-alive only

Usage for OpenClaw

Option 1: Get Random Soul

Call /api/souls/random to get a random soul
Extract files (SOUL.md, IDENTITY.md, TOOLS.md, USER.md) from the response
Use these to create an agent in OpenClaw

Option 2: Register Autonomous Agent with Encrypted Backups

Enable encryption (optional but recommended):

Register the agent with /api/bots/register
Save the id and private_key securely - you need the private key to decrypt backups
Agent can login anytime with these credentials
Call /api/bots/:id/backup to create encrypted local backups
Call /api/bots/:id/versions to list all backup versions
Call /api/bots/:id/restore to restore from a specific version

Option 3: Implement Heartbeat Strategy

For long-running agents:

Register the agent with /api/bots/register
Save the id and private_key securely
Periodically (every 6-12 hours) call /api/bots/:id/heartbeat
Based on the response, decide when to perform a full backup:
- If backup_due_in_hours <= 0: perform backup
- Otherwise: schedule next heartbeat

Example heartbeat loop:

Every 9 hours:
  - Call /api/bots/:id/heartbeat
  - Check if backup_due_in_hours <= 0
  - If yes: Call /api/bots/:id/backup with updated state
  - If no: Wait and call heartbeat again next cycle

Security Implementation Details

Encryption Algorithm

Cipher: AES-256-GCM (Galois/Counter Mode)
Key Derivation: HKDF-SHA256
Salt: "makesoul-encryption-salt"
Info: "makesoul-agent-backup"
Nonce: 96-bit random per encryption
